Today is “Teal Tuesday”, the National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day on Long Island, a nationwide public awareness campaign launched by Khrissy Lupinacci, of LI OCEANS Inc (Long Island Ovarian Cancer Education Advocacy Network & Support). September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, but today has been chosen on Long Island as the day to wear teal and “help promote public education and much needed awareness of the deadliest form of gynecological cancer called ovarian cancer,” according to Lupinacci.
There is no 100% accurate or effective method for early detection for ovarian cancer, yet early detection is what saves lives. Even a Pap test doesn’t detect ovarian cancer. Three-quarters of women are diagnosed in the later stages of cancer, with the five year survival rate being only 30 percent. This year alone, the lives of over 22,000 will be claimed by ovarian cancer, and another 15,000 women will be diagnosed with it.
Right now there is a lack of early detection tests, a lack of preventative methods, and a lack of awareness about this form of cancer. To learn more, get involved, or donate, visit the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.
