Polo is a 6 ft tall, dark-haired, bilingual 36 year old male. He is also India’s only gorilla since his mate, 46 year old Sumathi passed away in 2000. For eight years now, his keepers at the zoo in Mysore, India, have desperately been seeking a companion for the lonely male.
Other zoos are reluctant to part with their western lowland gorillas, since the species is endangered. The zoo in Mysore does not want to part with Polo since he is India’s only gorilla. So now we have a problem: one very healthy, but very lonely silverback gorilla. Won’t someone give this guy a chance?
Although Polo is in good physical health, he is suffering emotionally and psychologically, and zoo enrichment alone is not enough. After eight years of solitude, he needs a mate.
