Who Knew? Biden is a Greenie!

by Allie on November 2, 2008

So I recently found out about the League of Conservation Voters, a group which aims to turn environmental issues into national priorities.  The LCV has scorecards on each politician based on their environmental goals and histories.  Joe Biden has done well according to the LCV’s scorecard.  Why does Biden kick Sarah Palin’s butt in environmentalism?

Biden:

  • supports 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2010
  • supports 40 mpg fuel efficiency standards by 2017
  • proposed a requirement that all cars marketed in U.S. be flex-fuel capable by 2017
  • wants major gas stations to add more biofuel pumps
  • wants the U.S. to use 20% renewable energy by 2020
  • opposes offshore drilling and drilling in ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge)
  • wants to take Big Oil’s $2 billion tax breaks to pay for offshore wind farms
  • wants U.S. to take a stronger stance to end commercial whaling
  • wants to update building codes

Biden says:

“I personally believe that the single most important step we can take to resume a leadership role in international climate change efforts would be to make real progress toward a domestic emissions-reduction regime. For too long we have abdicated the responsibility to reduce our own emissions, the largest single source of the problem we face today. We have the world’s largest economy, with the highest per-capita emissions. Rather than leading by example, we have retreated from international negotiations.” (January 30, 2007)

He also says:

“If I could wave a wand, and the Lord said I could solve one problem, I would solve the energy crisis. That’s the single most consequential problem we can solve. It’s what you have to do to get greenhouse gases under control.”

Palin:

  • promotes aerial hunting of wolves
  • offered a bounty of $150 per left front leg from freshly killed wolves
  • believes human-enhanced global warming is a farce
  • supports drilling in ANWR
  • opposed both the polar bear and the unique Cook Inlet beluga whale from being listed as endangered species
  • actively campaigned against a state ballot measure this summer aimed at protecting Alaska’s Bristol Bay.
  • supports the proposal for Pebble Mine, which will decimate the salmon population and ecosystem of Bristol Bay

Palin, on the other hand, well her motto is:
“Drill, baby, drill.” (said on numerous occasions)
UPDATE:

Don’t forget to check out the article Joe Biden has an Awesome Environmental Record from Jeff at Science Says (one of my favorite blogs), which inspired me to blog about the vote, as well as The Truth About Sarah Palin from the folks over at Grizzly Bay.  Browse Science Says for more fantastic articles about the candidates, and Grizzly Bay for more info about the types of things Palin supports.  Ladies:  please follow through on this, and educate yourself about Palin’s views on women’s rights….it is soooo important!
