Close Encounters With Marine Mammals

I don’t know how many of you remember the Kurt Jones photo from 2003, of the surfer with the “shark”.  (It is actually a DOLPHIN in the photo).  If you don’t remember this amazing photo, here it is:


Well, I think I may have found an even cooler close-encounter between a marine mammal and an outdoor watersports buff.  Or rather, my dad found it and passed it along.  Australian kiteboarder David Sheridan was kitesurfing one day, when a camera attached to his kiteboard caught the following shot:

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Sheridan’s encounter got a little too close, as he was bonked in the head by the  whale’s tail.  Now that’s a close encounter!
