National Geographic Will Have You HOOKED

2009 June 29

This summer, starting tonight, June 29, at 10pm ET/PT, National Geograpic is sure to have you HOOKED!  Both science geeks and sportsfishermen alike will rejoice in the show- part fun fishy facts, part thrill of the chase.  Anyone who’s ever held a rod and reel in their life will be holding their breath waiting to see if the show’s fishermen will catch these bad boys!

Journey across the globe to see megafishing in action, along with new conservation research being done to protect these monster fish.  Some of the species in the show I have seen before, others I haven’t.  One thing is for certain:  I’ve never seen them this big!

Tonight’s episode is called “Vampire Fish”, but should probably have been called “The Gnarly Teeth Edition”.

Not only are there some gnarly chompers  and monstrously large fish to be seen, but there is a great scene of some daring Aussies catching and tagging a great white shark…..from shore….using a truck.

Later this summer, join National Geographic Explorer Zeb Hogan for two episodes: “Monster Fish of Thailand” and “Monster Fish of Mongolia”.  Zeb is the man behind The Megafishes Project, a five-year mission to help preserve the world’s biggest freshwater fish.  If the fish don’t have you HOOKED, then this conservation cutie surely will.  He’s quite a catch!  ::giggle::

Some of the behemoths on the show have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, but now they face extinction.  Producer/filmmaker Dean Johnson says, “Most of the species I film won’t be on this planet in the next 50 years, and each time I look through the viewfinder I realize the images we are capturing will be telling a story that others may never have the opportunity to see.”  So tune in while you have the chance to seem!

The premier of vampire fish was a major disappointment…….in the first sequence the angler hooked a large Goliath Tiger fish….showed him fighting the fish…….however, there were three different pieces of tackle shown(two spinning and one conventional), while fighting this one fish…..and he turned the large conventional reel upside down and cranked it left handed, same as the two spinning setups……….this takes re-enactment and regard for audience awareness to a new low……don’t think I’ll tune in next week…….

Hmm I’m going to have to watch again and keep my eyes peeled on the tackle. It’s been awhile since I’ve been fishing and I completely missed that. Good eye!

Hi Allie, thanks for the nice post and links to great videos. I guess the more we get to love nature, the more we would become more responsible people with regard to preserving it. It is perhaps a lack of awareness and a detachment from nature that has originally led us to damage our environment in the first place. This series would surely help us get closer to nature.

    Lovely post!
