She Who Flips Rocks, Finds No Pill Bugs

by Allie on September 14, 2009

In an attempt to help my sister with her science homework, I spent two hours being attacked my mosquitoes while I flipped over rocks in search of pill bugs. After flipping rocks and bricks, I had only found 4 of the little buggers.

My day did have a surprising turn though. While flipping bricks in the butterfly garden I planted last year, I discovered that my little garden is now a haven for bees, and lots of them.

I once had a spider whose favourite diet consisted of pillbugs. I found them by picking up an evergreen cone from a moist environment and banging it on the ground, not too hard. Every time, a few pillbugs would fall out.

Try flipping old logs. You’ll have better luck.

What I would’ve given to had this advice at the time! We spent two hours trying to find ten pillbugs, for some unknown experiment. Apparently all the kids did was look at the bugs and then the teacher released them!
